Unreal Editor For Fortnite (UEFN) ready for launch

Unreal Editor for Fortnite commonly known as “UEFN” in the Fortnite Creative community, and also known as “Creative 2.0”, is finally being released on the 22nd of March, 2023. Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) is a new PC application that allows you to create, develop, and distribute games and experiences directly into Fortnite.

UEFN was supposed to be released to the public months back in December of 2022, but was delayed. It was then expected to be released in January of 2023, but Tim Sweeney, the CEO and Founder of Epic Games, mentioned on Twitter that it was going to be delayed until March at the earliest.

Now, with the release of UEFN being simply days away, the community is absolutely vibrating with excitement as it makes hypotheses on just what the release of UEFN could do to Fortnite Creative, and even Fortnite in its entirety.

And, of course, the first thing many plan on doing with such an incredible tool of creation in Fortnite is to recreate the chapter 1 map.

Features and their examples

There are a number of features in the upcoming UEFN.

Audio Uploading

You can upload your own audio files to UEFN.

Examples can be music you make, just sounds you captured with a microphone, your own voice in case you wish to act as a voice actor for something on the island of your creation—or perhaps if you wish to have your voice act as a narrator or a helpful voice to players.

You can then likely use these audio files to change what one would normally hear in the game. Like, perhaps if you wish to make a truck in the game sound more like a racecar. Or if you wish to change the sound of footsteps, whether to muffle them, make them louder, or change them entirely. Perhaps, if you want to mess with players as a prank, you could make an AR sound like a shotgun. Have the Pump Shotgun—if you decide to have it on your island—sound like the Scar.

It’s the little things that can mess with players the most, after all. Or you can choose to be far more creative than just that with the ability to upload your own audio to UEFN.

Custom Models

You can make your own models.

If the ones already in Creative do not appeal to you, you can go ahead and make your own model. Model examples: Sticks, walls (oddly shaped ones from the ones already in the game would be a better example), leafs.

Just about any shape one would require, they could make.

Or, if you aren’t an expert at making models or simply don’t wish to make so much of an effort, y

ou could take custom models others are willing to share for free or for money, and use those instead.

The Unreal Engine Marketplace is a place where you can find such models and other such assets.

Verse

Verse is a new programming language specifically made for UEFN. With the introduction of Verse, we can now further believe that UEFN may change everything in regards to Fortnite, and not just Fortnite Creative.

Games are made by developers with the use of programming languages, and now that Verse is around, Fortnite Creative creators who are programmers could learn Verse, its limits, its potential, and begin to make actual games inside of Fortnite Creative. Not games like the LTM-type games that Fortnite Creative already has, but something much closer to actual games.

Even many Fortnite Creative creators that are not programmers will begin to learn the programming language in their journey to become better Fortnite Creative island creators. Or simply so that their work stands out from the rest.

It is possible to live edit with UEFN and, according to Shiina, a well known Fortnite leaker, it will be possible to use UEFN even during downtimes for the most part. But the ability to play test your creations in Fortnite Creative will not be possible until the downtime ends.

Teams of creators can work together across PC and console to develop and test islands in real-time, however it is unlikely that UEFN will be on consoles. What this likely means is that console users can help with creative 1.0 tools and with island testing, while PC users are the ones to use the more advanced tools like UEFN and its programming language and other such abilities.

Another known leaker has mentioned his intent to learn to use UEFN with some friends to create some projects of his own.

A number of people are all claiming that they will recreate the “OG map”, with some claiming to wish to recreate the map from different chapters/seasons. Whether only the maps will be recreated or will they recreate all the old problems such as building not working when any object was in the way of a build remains to be seen.

SypherPK, a very well known figure, streamer, and YouTuber, in the Fortnite community has even said his piece on the matter on Twitter.

One thing is clear: A very large number of people are dead set on making sure the “OG map” is recreated. And that above all else, it will be recreated. How well, though? Only time will tell. Especially as the “OG map” was so enjoyable for many players because a large part of the player base was not as good at the game as they are now, so will it truly retain the fun people seem to remember having on that map?
There are already Twitter accounts dedicated to the recreation of maps from various seasons/chapters once UEFN comes out. With, perhaps, Atlas being the most famous of these accounts so far.
